The typeface was designed in 1973 by Helena Nowak-Mroczek in collaboration with Roman Tomaszewski at the Type Faces Centre in Warsaw. The first version got a distinction award at a competition in Dresden in 1971. Hel Regular and SemiBold were produced at the Linotype Matricess Manufacturing plant in Katowice, with intent for newspaper titles and casting on Ludlow/Nebitype machines.
